Connect your OpenAI account
AI Mode is optional. It swaps the free built-in recognition for OpenAI's transcription, which handles technical terms and student accents more accurately. It runs on your own OpenAI account and bills by the minute, so you stay in control of the spend.
Free, built in
Uses your browser's built-in speech recognition. Nothing to set up, no account, no cost. Great for everyday speech.
More accurate, your key
Streams audio to OpenAI for higher accuracy with technical vocabulary and other languages. Billed to your own OpenAI key by the minute.
Connect your key
- Create an account at platform.openai.com (or sign in if you already have one).
- Add a payment method under Settings → Billing. AI Mode needs billing enabled; it isn't available on the free trial tier.
- Go to API keys, click Create new secret key, and copy it. OpenAI shows the key only once, so copy it before closing the dialog.
- In the extension, open Settings & styling → Speech Recognition, choose AI Mode, paste your key, and click Save settings.
- Start captions as usual. AI Mode now handles the transcription.
Estimate your cost
AI Mode is billed per minute of audio transcribed. Set your typical usage below to see what it would cost. Browser mode stays free no matter what.
Set minutes per day, days per month, and days per school year to match your schedule; every figure updates live. "Minutes per day" is how much you actually run in AI Mode (Browser mode is always free). The default rate, $0.017 per minute, is OpenAI's transcription cost; update it if OpenAI changes pricing. Estimates only, billed to your own OpenAI account.
Privacy
In Browser mode, audio is processed on your own device and never leaves it. In AI Mode, audio is streamed to OpenAI under your own key to produce the transcript; the extension never records or stores it, and never sends it to the developer. See the privacy policy for details.
